It was ( and still is) only available on the mid-range model. I bought the least expensive model with the lowest amount of HD storage as well, only extra I paid for on purchase was an upgrade to 16GB of RAM. It never even entered my mind that *any* model of an iMac would arrive without a network port.
Your comment has made me think though. I might look at a trade-in of my iMac to get the mid-range one with network port included *and* more ports :)
I had Macbook Air, iPad, iPhone and was about to buy a smart watch to complete set. But I did an about turn. I ditched my Macbook for a Thinkpad, got a Huawei phone (hand me down) and smartwatch. was it because I wasn't happy with the quality of Apple products? No, in fact I admit their built is superior. But I couldn't justify the prices and I was getting irritated by Apple's controlling ways. They force you to stay in their ecosystem with their software, by limiting your data space, and yes, by removing ports. I hate that you cant repair iPhones or upgrade them on your own.
I felt imprisoned by their pretty walled garden and broke out. No regrets 😆
I am very stubborn and refuse to be locked behind any ecosystem. Apple lost me because of that - I hate being told to upgrade just because Apple has deemed my version of iPad obsolete. Or forced to buy cloud space because they gave me a barely functional amount on my laptop. These practices put a sour taste in my mouth. I prefer PC because of the freedom it offers, and in the long run, it's just more cost-effective.
I never understood the zealotry around Apple. It's like a religion or something. And I shy away from all cult-like thinking lol
All that makes sense. It's crazy to see people fighting nearly religious level wars on social media over Mac v Windows or IPhone vs Android.
I've been pretty agnostic in this context for quite a few years. I still like the iMac because I can't find a desktop all-in-one that matches it. I've also used a Linux laptop that was excellent, but I gave it away to a student who needed it more, would put it to more use. I've been an Android user for more than 10 years now, can't picture ever using an iPhone again.
On the upgrade side of things I got fed up years ago with being told when I was allowed to / eligible for upgrades by cell carriers - so for many years now I only buy unlocked phones.
I have never bought unlocked phones and honestly, I wonder what that is even like! What do they lock you from?
I buy mine straight from the tech provider. For eg, I buy my phone straight from Huawei etc if I need to. Honestly, most of my phones are hand me downs because my dad buys so many of them he always had a spare, and I felt that it's such a waste not to use them.
Sounds like you're already doing the same as me, when you are buying your own straight from the vendor of the phone - as long as Huawei / others are not tying you to one carrier at purchase.
I'm happy / not happy that you're sharing the frustration here. I didn't mind when a few ports were removed, supposedly to allow for bigger batteries or other core components, but the level it's gone to now really does seem silly to me. And also leaves where I don't think I could ever even consider a Mac laptop.
I am currently staring at an Apple Watch I never use that just sits on the charger, a 2015 MacBook Pro 15.4 inch big boy, an iPad Pro 12.9 inch that keeps the Apple Watch company on a daily basis, and my iPhone 12 pro. This isn’t counting the fiancé’s arsenal of mac 💻 products 12 feet away in the other room.
I’ll likely never go back to pc/android. Had a friend even gift me a week with a spare Pixel phone. Not even that broke the MaCddiction.
All in all, I think most mac users agree. What the heck! I have so many adapters and dongles. They all get lost (in the fiancé’s bag), or they contort, or the roomba sucks up the chord.
Then, get this, the new M1 chip cannot connect to more than one display without an extension/download. What?!?! I’m spoiled and need my three monitors.
$3k for a computer that can’t do what every other laptop can?
God, I’m sick to my stomach whilst simultaneously looking forward to the next one I buy. Are we all sick or what?
You’d think they’re ignoring our requests for additional ports on purpose just to test our limits. Can’t think of any other logical explanation.
Thanks for the great comment and the great rundown of your situation. I know the feeling of being locked into a tech ecosystem well. I started getting myself (at least a little ways) out of it several years back. I made a rule for myself that any daily driver type app had to be great on mobile, great on Mac, great in a browser. I'm still in the same position as you though. I'm frustrated and complaining about some Apple / iMac issues, but I can't see myself not using an iMac.
I'm a bit confused, why did you not include the "gigabit ethernet" option (built into the power adapter) at time of purchase?

Wow, that's a big switch. And a rare escape from those walls :)

Have a Selore device to add ports to mine, definitely need some ports.
Steve Jobs had that argument with developers and with Steve Wozniak who wanted more ports and Jobs wanted less...

Good read as always.
Cheers.
