I’ve got a similar aversion to smartwatches, for the reasons you listed. I do like Google hardware - loved my Pixel 3a, but gave that up for an iPhone, to appease the in-laws, and their green/blue text tribalism.

Might try a Pixel Watch anyway, especially if the price drops substantially whenever they roll out version two.

I never tried any of the A versions of the Pixel, but I know lots of people loved the 3A. I'm hoping that the next gen of this watch will have better battery life, though not optimistic given the history of smart watches.

Hi, Patrick! Interesting read. I purchased a $27 smart watch from Amazon. I primarily use it to track my sleep and my heart rate during workouts. The time mirrors the cell phone which is tuned to the cell network. And, I only need to charge it once a week. It is a model IW1.

Thanks for sharing Ernie. I'm still only 5.5 days in with the Pixel Watch. My jury is still out on whether it's a keeper :)

It's quite amusing to reflect on the fact that I've been the owner of an Apple Watch for about four years now, a generous gift from my wife. In the rapidly evolving world of technology, it's almost considered an antique! My usage pattern is somewhat sporadic - I'll find myself wearing it consistently for a month, only to then leave it untouched for the next.

Admittedly, the prospect of maintaining another digital device can be somewhat daunting. Despite this, I must confess that I enjoy the functionality and convenience it offers during the periods I do use it. Your comment has sparked my curiosity about what the next level of wearable technology might offer.

I'd appreciate any recommendations you might have. What do you think would be a suitable upgrade or alternative?

Hey that's a great gift from your wife. Upgrade or alternative - hmmm - it depends on what you want out of it. I want mostly the fitness tracking features. That's why I spent years just using those, no regular watch. I like the Pixel Watch because those features seem solid with its Fitbit integration and more. I don't want almost any of the "smart" features - don't want to install extra apps, not really a fan of notifications on my wrist if they are not fitness related etc.

If you like all the smart features and you're in the Apple ecosystem, especially using an iPhone, then upgrading the Apple Watch might be cool. If you're more of fan of traditional watches, you could look at Withings or Fossil hybrid watches with some level of fitness tracking, but more focus on a good looking watch.
