Shiny Happy New Things: Claude's Android APP
The Claude GenAI chatbot has been a favorite of mine since my very early days of getting to know these tools. It has also consistently shown to be ChatGPT’s biggest rival in industry benchmark tests, receiving mostly great reviews along the way as well. The company that makes Claude, Anthropic, also has a stellar reputation - not least for its transparency and its heavy focus on creating safe and secure AI models.
Just a few weeks ago, Claude 3.5 Sonnet was released - which Anthropic describes as:
Our best combination of performance and speed for efficient, high-throughput tasks.
The only thing missing for me with Claude has been an Android app, though I could access it on my phone via Poe. Yesterday the Android app hit the Play Store, I found out about it mid-evening, and did something meant to be a happy dance that frightened my dog. All due respect to her feelings (no more happy dances when she’s around), I am very happy to see this app - and have given it some good use today.

The Claude Android app works just like Claude on iOS and the web, meaning you get access to:
Multi-platform support: Pick up and continue conversations with Claude across web, iOS, and Android apps
Vision capabilities: Take new pictures or upload files for real-time image analysis
Multilingual processing: Real-time language translation to help communicate or translate aspects of the world around you
Advanced reasoning: Claude can help you tackle complex problems, like analyzing contracts while traveling or conducting market research to prepare for a meeting
I’ve had several quick questions for it and some slightly longer conversations, and of course like most of these apps Claude keeps chat history so it’s easy to jump back into a previous prompt’s topic:
My one big early impression of the Claude Android app - and same goes in its web app- is that is very fast. I haven’t tried to find a way to measure response speed, but gut feel wise it feels like the fastest responder among the six GenAI apps I’m using right now.
