There are very few real Flagship Killer phones around over recent years. The original OnePlusOne was the first of these - and the term is used for a smartphone that has hardware and software specs that match or beat all the top tier models from the biggest companies making them.
I think the Nothing Phone 2 is the only phone that can claim to be in that category right now. The model I’ve been using for a year has 12GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, a 6.7 inch LTPO OLED display, 45w wired charging, and a host of other top tier specs across just about every aspect of the phone.
It’s priced at $549.
That’s less than half the cost of the top models from Apple, Samsung, and close to 50 percent less than the top Google Pixel 8 Pro.
Here’s a little spec comparison that feels crazy to me - speed test results when testing the cellular network. Testing the Pixel 8 Pro and the Nothing Phone 2, both unlocked and using the T-Mobile network over the course of weeks and months, when I’ve occasionally swapped back to using the Pixel, here’s what I’ve seen:
The Pixel 8 Pro tops out at around 80Mbps download speed - and far more often is well below that.
Results for the Nothing Phone 2 look like the image at the top of this post - very close to 4X faster than the Pixel. And that is not the best result I’ve seen for the Nothing Phone 2.
It’s a little warm in Texas and it’s been a hectic work week, so that’s all I’ve got for today.
Are any of you using a phone that fits the flagship killer category? Or have you used one in the past?
