ChatGPT Group Chat Quick Take - No Thanks
The Neuron and others are reporting that ChatGPT has rolled out/is rolling out group chats globally, across all its plan levels. They offer this overview of it:
The feature works like you’d expect:
Tap the people icon, share an invite link, and everyone can chat together with ChatGPT jumping in when needed.
You can @ mention it for responses, set custom instructions for tone, and ChatGPT even reacts with emojis.
Privacy-first design means your personal memory stays separate from group chats.
My initial thoughts when seeing this was who wants this and I definitely don’t want this. After some time, they’re the same.
I have three reasons why I’m not interested at all in ChatGPT group chats:
As The Neuron mentioned, we have dedicated messaging apps that already do this well. We have Reddit, Discord, and other larger forums for groups chats on steroids.
This feels like another sign of OpenAI’s flailing around, trying to do all things and be all things. It feels a little desperate.
The memory feature in leading models like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini is a feature I like a lot and find very useful. I use it with care, never sharing anything that is sensitive data of any type. I don’t trust that OpenAI can provide proper security guardrails for group chats - especially in there current mode of “throw enough features at the wall and see what sticks”.
What do you all think? Are you going to dive into ChatGPT group chats?

Love this perspective, thank you for sharing. I completeley agree with your concerns about the need for this feature and, more criticaly, the security implications. It really makes you pause and consider the broader direction of AI development and user trust, which is paramount.
